The Top 7 Places Where Quantitative Analysts Work in Poland Today
Up until the late 2000s there were hardly any quantitative analysts working in Poland. The role has certainly gained in popularity since the opening of international capital markets across Central Eastern Europe. Some call them the Rockstars of Wall Street. Others call them financial mathematicians. In Poland they are widely known as Quantitative Analysts. They work with and model equities, fixed income, risk, ESG, and other financial instruments.
In Poland there were a handful of equities analysts who also worked as quantitative analysts (or quants) back at the end of the 2000s. There was a certain fund called Arka with a team located in Poznan. The returns that clients received were impressive. They were mainly returns from Polish bonds and equities. Today there is a small team located in Poznan and Warsaw at Santander TFI that continue the legacy.
There were investment banks located in Poland from the 1990s. Some of them appeared as early as 1991 when the Polish Stock Exchange was reopened. But to say that the role of a quant was popular before 2015 would not be true.
The Shared Services recruiting Capital Markets specialists in Poland
By 2012 companies like RBS (today NatWest), Citi, UBS, Credit Suisse, and HSBC had already started some sort of shared service operations in Poland. At this stage they were mainly looking for people to help with processes such as KYC or accounting. It was really only in 2015 that the role of quant came onto the radar. HSBC advertised the first roles in April of 2015. Credit Suisse started earlier, but it was still a challenge. The roles at HSBC were to be based out of Krakow, Credit Suisse was sourcing for Wroclaw. But most quants were in Warsaw and a handful in Poznan at this stage.
Franklin Templeton had worked this out early on. Locating their service centre in Poznan back in 2007. Today the landscape has evolved. Other players have entered the Polish market and some, like Credit Suisse, have been absorbed by others.
