Senior UNIX Administrator

We are working as a recruitment provider searching on our Client’s behalf for a person in the following role:

Responsibilities

Join a team responsible for delivering and supporting enterprise Linux infrastructure in a modern DevOps environment. In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain highly available Linux platforms that support critical business applications. You will work closely with application, infrastructure, and engineering teams to deliver secure, reliable, and automated infrastructure services across both production and non-production environments.
You will play a key role in driving operational excellence through automation, supporting platform stability, and contributing to the adoption of new technologies while ensuring compliance with internal standards and operational requirements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Linux server environments, primarily Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), with exposure to UNIX platforms such as Solaris.
  • Support infrastructure across development, testing, and production environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and DevOps teams to deliver platform services and troubleshoot complex technical issues.
  • Develop automation solutions using Shell, Python, or Perl to streamline operational processes and reduce manual effort.
  • Perform incident troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and implement permanent solutions to improve platform stability.
  • Participate in infrastructure design, implementation, upgrades, and optimization throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and capacity management standards.
  • Analyse infrastructure change requests and translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Configure and support enterprise storage, clustering, virtualization, and networking technologies.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to optimize performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call support schedule approximately once every six weeks, providing 12-hour on-call coverage to ensure platform availability and timely incident response.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux environments, primarily Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • Strong expertise in Linux system administration, including performance tuning, kernel parameter optimization, logical volume management, and multipathing.
  • Experience with UNIX platforms such as Solaris and/or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is an advantage.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using Shell, Python, or Perl.
  • Solid experience with Veritas Volume Manager and Veritas Cluster Server.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, or Citrix.
  • Knowledge of SAN/NAS storage administration, filesystem configuration, clustering, and replication technologies.
  • Good understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, DNS, load balancers, VIPs, and firewalls.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Experience working in large-scale enterprise environments with high availability, security, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and operational best practices is considered an advantage.
