What Jobs are growing in popularity in 2024

According to a recent report from LinkedIn in the UK the skill sets for jobs will change a huge 65% by 2030 globally. A total of 25 roles are highlighted in the report, but not all of them are about automation or artificial intelligence.

The skill sets needed for jobs has only changed 25% since 2015. A number that might surprise you. Especially as we’ve just gone through a global pandemic which drove digitalization like a tsunami.

Sustainability Manager

Back to the report, the job ranked number one is that of a ‘Sustainability Manager’. A person who must deal with the minefield of topics surrounding UN sustainable development goals and ESG. For those of our readers who aren’t familiar with this, that is E = Environmental, S = Social and G = Governance. The S also stands for non-environmental ‘sustainability’ which is an area that includes topics like human rights. It is also a topic that will need the most development in the role of Sustainability Manager in the near future.

The next few jobs that are ranked are common today. Be that Sales Development Representative or Underwriting Analyst which are second and third respectively. One must scroll to the seventh ranked job for another more novel position.

Artificial Intelligence Engineer

2023 saw the continued rise of everything ChatGPT. It also saw the popularization of positions such as prompt engineer. But, before you can ‘prompt’ your artificial intelligence you first need an engineer to really understand the algorithm. That and all the related data, which is hopefully clean data. All things natural language processing and machine learning are important with this role. In the United States today there are 17,000 jobs that need artificial intelligence. In the UK that number is 346, and in Poland there are 461. Data according to Glassdoor.

Demand Generation Manager

The eighth ranked job is the role of demand generation manager. A role that sits next to the sales function in most companies and became popular as part of the work from home phenomenon. This role appears to be popular already, especially as we have become used to seeing words like ‘growth hacking’. However, many people just think if I have 3000 on LinkedIn, I can be a lead generator. Not really. You might need to learn about Search Engine Optimization and other topics like marketing automation to be good at this role.

Knowing how the Google algorithm works is something that many marketing people are learning. The question is whether they can see the fundamental difference between how lead generation works in our current Web 2 environment. And how it will look in a Web 3 environment. Interesting?

Cyber Security

The tenth and eleventh ranked jobs are focused on cyber security. In tenth it is the role of a security operations centre analyst. Someone who is able to analyze vulnerabilities. Someone who may be partial to some penetration testing.

In eleventh is the role of ‘Cyber Security Manager’, a leadership version of the previous role who needs to learn to protect companies. To protect them from their own employees in most cases, as employees are one of the major reasons for cybersecurity problems today.

Investor Relations Associate

This role comes in at twelfth and might be a bit of surprise for most people. However, people today are much more likely to know about Tesla or Apple shares than they were a few years ago. Especially in countries outside of the U.S. This, in turn, has created a demand for more information relating to what is commonly called capital markets. If you want to manage communication with investors, then this area might be one of interest.

Chief People Officer

As Verita HR is a Human Resources provider the thirteenth ranked job was of particular interest. No more human resources jobs, today these jobs are rebranded as ‘people’ jobs. Seen as a ‘new era’ for human resources, the people roles that are becoming popular have something else to offer.

First it was the role of Chief Happiness Officer that turned heads across the world. However, the world appears to have settled on the ‘People’ title now. Where HR was often involved in compliance and setting procedures, the people role is seen as more ‘human’. People roles focus on talent more than human resources did in the past. They also look at the employee experience in more detail. Are the days of human resources standing guard against all things trade unions over? Web 3 seems to be suggesting this.

2024 will hold a lot of surprises. Best to familiarize yourself with these surprises before they creep up on you.
